PRIMARY JOB FUNCTION

Contributes to and leads certain aspects of research, design, development, and testing of new and existing products.  This includes communicating and coordinating with internal stakeholders (e.g. Marketing, Quality, Manufacturing, Sales, etc.) and external stakeholders (e.g. end users, clinicians, purchasers, development partners, etc.) to understand user needs and use environments, define design parameters to support high-quality products, and drive product engineering from concept development through launch.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for design and development of new products and improvements to existing products; leads product engineering for assigned project(s) from concept to launch; collaborates with external development and manufacturing partners as needed
  • Conducts research to guide new product development or generate evidence for existing products; includes conducting literature searches, lab testing, and white paper studies
  • Interacts with end users and internal departments (Marketing, Quality, Manufacturing, Sales, and others) to define and develop product requirements and performance targets
  • Works directly with end users and project team members to establish feasibility of concepts via iterative concept development and prototype evaluation
  • Generates product models, concept layouts, and prints using a CAD software; applies geometric dimensioning and tolerancing accordingly
  • Works with Manufacturing throughout design development to incorporate Design-for-Manufacturability (DFM) and Design-for-Assembly (DFA) into all product designs
  • Performs required testing to ensure product meets functional and design requirements and complies with all relevant standards and regulations; includes generating appropriate paperwork (e.g. protocols and reports)
  • Responsible for generation of intellectual property, as well as initial patent review of designs for patentability and freedom to operate
  • Effectively communicates with management and key stakeholders with respect to status, risks and mitigation activities for their portion of a given project
  • Knows and follows all laws and policies that apply to job, and maintains the highest levels of professionalism, ethics and compliance at all times
  • Performs sustaining engineering of existing products as required, including cost engineering, DFM/DFA, and improving reliability and/or robustness of products
  • Performs other special projects and functions as assigned by manager
  • Roles and responsibilities may be shifted to maximize customer and Company success

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering (or equivalent) required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years professional work experience required (includes co-op/intern time)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced early-stage startup where “many hats” must be worn
  • Knowledge of CAD software (Pro-E, Solidworks, etc.)
  • Prior project management experience
  • Experience in medical device industry desirable
  • Strong communication and interaction skills, with the ability to interface with end users and sales/marketing personnel
  • Demonstrated creative design ability
  • Demonstrated success in bringing product from design through introduction on time
  • “Hands-on” engineer and problem solver: takes initiative to identify and implement solutions to problems
  • Motivated learner: thrives on learning new skills to accelerate engineering acumen
  • Position may require up to 20% travel and is based in greater Philadelphia, PA region
